Bolder Voices
Bolder Voices began in 2010 and our final performance was in 2019, just before Lockdown. We sang the songs of “age and rage”. Check out our six YouTubes below.
The first was inspired when the monthly pension was increased by 12p while bankers bonuses soared. (The Bankers Are to Blame).
More rage when government started closing older people’s centres (Ain’t Gonna Close my Centre Down).
Every year we ran singing projects in care homes. That gave rise to the next one, “Touch Me”
Our fourth was inspired by the statistic that 4 out of 5 older people found it impossible to cross the lights in time before the lights went red. Would the then London Mayor, Boris Johnson come to a show and see us perform “Hey Mr Boris”? No luck.
Fortunately, on his campaign tour, the next Mayor to be, Sadiq Khan watched it, and also the premier of our fourth video, the celebration of London’s great benefit for older people. “Love that Freedom Pass” had older people dancing in the aisles and waving their freedom passes around.
The final video was a straightforward celebration of age, and very intergenerational, where the youngest performer was 3 months and the oldest was 90.
Bolder Voices was started by Clair Chapwell and Laurie White. All vimeos are by Bhavesh Hindocha of Loud Minority. Photography by Rosie Litterick.
